New Year’s Resolutions: Make ’em or Break ’em?

I hope everyone had an amazing holiday and got to spend time with the people you love!  Personally, this was the most fun Christmas yet.  My whole family came to KC and it was so fun to have them all there on Christmas morning!  The boys are at a very fun age and enjoyed both opening gifts and also giving gifts to others.  But now the magic is settling and reality is setting in, time to find homes for the new items we received, clean up my disaster of a house, and stop eating 5000 calories a day. Booooo. 

I usually don’t make New Years resolutions.  Let’s face it, most people don’t end up sticking with them  and I just figured I’d be the same way, so why bother in the first place?  But this year I am turning over a new leaf and setting a goal for myself.  Posture.  Mine is terrible.  TERRIBLE!  It wasn’t always so bad.  I had years of dance training when I was younger, and I always stood up fairly straight.  Fairly straight, with the exception of a slight sway back (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, think lower back arched and booty slightly sticking out).  But now the sway back is the least of my posture problems.  

After years of cradling babies, nursing, carting toddlers around, and looking down at my phone my shoulders have become extremely hunched over.  My neck hurts pretty much all the time and I haven’t had full range of motion in my neck in a long, long time.  It’s pretty amazing, actually, what you can learn to live with.  I’ve been to the chiropractor but my muscles are so tight and have taken home in their new, slumped over position.  It’s virtually impossible to get an adjustment and not have my frame revert back to its old ways within 24 hrs.  I find it uncomfortable to stand up straight or even sit up straight for a long period of time.  It’s much more comfortable to slouch, and I really want to get out of that comfort zone!
Basically, it’s going to boil down to me dedicating time to do necessary stretches to loosen the tight muscles, exercising to strengthen other muscles, and just plain ole remembering to stand up straight.  The last one will be the hardest, so I need you to hold me to it!  If you see me hunched over, remind me to stand up!  It’s soooo hard to remember!  With all of the other things I have to remember on a day to day basis, I am going to do my best to keep this on the forefront of my mind.  My muscle memory and brain memory need to be reset.  I’m motivated though.  I don’t want to be an old hunchback lady with severe osteoporosis.  I’m going to be like a Rockette with an owl neck by the end of 2017!  #goals  What is your New Year’s resolution?  Do you usually stick with it or end up breaking it?
