My Favorite Remedies for Dry, Cracked Hands

January 11, 2018

Winter is here with a bang this year!  Man, has it been cold or what?  We got a tiny break in the freeze yesterday, only to be followed by ice and school cancellations today.  We have been a little stir crazy in this house because with the exception of one day this week, it’s been too cold to go outside and play, even for a little bit.

Cold weather does a number on my skin, and especially my hands.  The dry air and cold temperatures definitely don’t help, but I think the addition of extra hand washing (trying to avoid those yucky winter germs) puts my poor hands over the edge.  My skin cracks, my cuticles bleed, and my hands feel like I have a job doing really hard manual labor.  #paulbunyon

Here are a few things that help me get through these dry winter months.

Weleda Skin Food
I love this stuff!  It is a bit greasy right when you put it on, so for those of you who don’t like that feeling on your hands, you may not like this one.  But, it is super soothing and really helps heal my skin.  It does soak into your skin and feels less greasy over time.  If I don’t want the greasy feeling on the palms of my hands, sometimes I will just put a little pea sized dot on the back of my hand and then rub it in with the back of my other hand.  I also love that it doesn’t have parabens and other junky ingredients.

Lano Intense Hand Cream
I recently discovered this stuff and I loved it so much that I gave it away to several people as Christmas gifts this year.  This stuff soaks in really well, but still keeps your skin soft and smooth.  It has no greasy feeling at all and it smells really good!  Also comes in a lemon scent, or you can save $$ by ordering the duo.  This brand also has a lip treatment, which I really want to try!

Solar Oil
This stuff is amazing for dry cuticles.  I paint a little bit on before bed and let it soak in overnight.  My cuticles are awful, and when they are dry, I find myself picking at them.  So, I try to remember to put this on regularly and it really makes a difference.

Sugar Scrub
I keep this DIY sugar scrub by my kitchen sink and try to use it several times a week, after washing my hands, when I know that I won’t be washing them again for a while.  The sugar helps exfoliate the dead skin away.  Then rinse and pat dry to let the coconut oil soak into your skin.

Aquaphor body spray
I usually avoid Aquaphor because I don’t like the greasy/sticky feeling it leaves on my hands and skin.  But, this spray is a game changer!  First of all, you can spray it on and not have to touch it at all if you don’t want to.  No greasy hands!  However, I spray it on my son’s knees and elbows, and then rub it in, and it is so much lighter than the regular Aquaphor.  I don’t find myself wanting to wipe it off my hands.  Love this stuff and it’s amazing for really dry patches of skin!

And let’s not forget the rest of your skin!   My absolute favorite body lotion, all year long, is this Aloe Body Butter.  It’s super hydrating and keeps my skin moisturized all day long.  I also use it on my boys because it doesn’t have any scent.

What are your favorite hand creams?
