How to Train Your Hair to go Longer Between Washes

April 16, 2020

Trying to see the silver lining in all of this quarantine business, this is the PERFECT time to train your hair to go longer between washes! I used to wash my hair every.single.day. Sometimes even twice a day! And now I usually wash it twice a week. But that change didn’t take place overnight.

The biggest hesitation for people to skip a day or two washing their hair is that it gets greasy. Well, being forced to stay at home, no one will see you except for your family, and my guess is they don’t care if you’re greasy.

Ok, so this would not be humanly possibly without the help of dry shampoo! I use dry shampoo almost every single day. It soaks up the grease and helps me go longer between washes! I actually have different dry shampoos for different reasons. My #1 favorite is Living Proof. But, that one is kind of pricey, so my favorite drugstore brand is Batiste. Those are the ones I use in the morning prior to styling my hair. There are so many different dry shampoos available, so if one doesn’t work for you, don’t hesitate to try a different one. I can’t even begin to count the number of brands I have tried over the years. In the evenings on day 3 or 4, I will also sprinkle in some of this Acure powder which helps soak up any oils overnight.

My main tip is to start small and work your way up. If you are an every day washer, try skipping just one day. Instead of washing, part your hair in a few different sections and spray the dry shampoo onto the roots, holding the can about 8-10″ away from your head. Let it sit for a few minutes to “marinate” before you brush or style it. Sometimes putting my hair in a pony tail or even half up would help it feel less greasy, so you may try a different style for these days.

Once you have the hang of this new schedule, your hair will start adjusting and will start producing less oil! When this happens, you can then add in another day! Continue to do this until you find your sweet spot. Personally, I wash twice a week. I have tried to go longer, but just can’t seem to make it happen. I’m super envious of those of you who can go a week between washes!

Styling on Day 1

After washing my hair with my beloved Olaplex Shampoo and Conditioner, I apply a heat protectant to the ends and up to about 3-4 inches from the roots. I also part my hair in several different places and apply a root booster directly on the root then massage it into the hair. I blow dry my hair upside down with this bamboo brush. I have used a bamboo brush forever and I love them! They help distribute your hair’s natural oils when you brush and they are gentle on your scalp.

My hair is naturally pretty frizzy (although thanks to the Olaplex, it’s as smooth as it’s ever been!), so I usually either run a flat iron through it or throw some curls in. I kind of switch it up using a curling iron for a while and then I’ll use my curling wand. No reason…just trying to make things more exciting! ha!

Styling on Day 2

I use a shower cap to avoid my hair getting wet. I usually stick with the same part I chose on Day 1. I will apply my dry shampoo and then usually finish my makeup while it works it’s magic. If my hair is flat or creased from sleeping, I will flip my head upside down and hit the roots with the hair dryer for just a few seconds. I blast them with heat to release the kinks, and then I do a cool blast to set my roots and add more volume. Then, I style as usual.

Styling on Day 3

Day 3 often looks similar to day 2, but sometimes I will change up my part if things are starting to look a little cray. I’ll throw a few extra curls in my hair to try and give it some life.

Styling on Day 4

This is usually my last day before I wash. Most of the time, I end up with a ponytail or bun of some sort. If I haven’t changed my part on day 3, it’s pretty much imperative that I change it day 4. I am also a huge fan of hats on day 4 (if you can get away with that). Throw a few curls in the bottom of your hair, cover up the top with a cute hat, and people think you really tried! I actually get so many compliments on days I wear hats….if people only knew what I was hiding under there! 😂

That’s about it folks! I’ll link all of my favorite hair products! Let me know if you try this method while you’re in quarantine! Your hair will thank you for it.
