Halloween 2018

November 6, 2018
It seems like Halloween was months ago.  And now, a mere six days later, it’s getting dark at 5:00 and snow is in the forecast.  Boo.  This Halloween, and actually the entire month of October, was absolutely perfect!  I have thoroughly enjoyed the leaves changing color SO much this year.  I guess it’s me getting older, slowing down a bit to actually appreciate the little things.  But, I do think it was just an amazing year for fall foliage!  And the weather was crisp and cool, just what a Halloween night should be!
Halloween for the Frenches this year involved a SWAT team!  Chase has been very engrossed in everything police/army/SWAT related for a while now, so he came up with the initial idea.  Y’all know I love a good family theme, so luckily Beckham went along with it.  Although, when asked by a few different people what he was going to be, he would often say something completely different…spider, ninja, tiger…just to name a few.  But, in the end, he was a SWAT.

Actually, he ended up being a SWAT tiger.  True to a fickle four year old’s style, he decided the morning of Halloween that he wanted to be a tiger, so in an effort to appease everyone, I got my eyeliner and drew some stripes on his face.  He proceeded to put his SWAT costume on and he was happy, so that’s all that matters!  If they start selling official SWAT tiger costumes next year, I am going to demand some sort of commission.
The boy’s costumes are from Costco and Adam and I purchased ours from the Halloween store.  I don’t usually purchase costumes, and truth be told, I went to the Halloween store, then left empty handed because I decided I was going to make the SWAT vests.  But, life happened, and I didn’t get it finished in time for the Trunk or Treat at school, which is TWO weeks before Halloween I might add!  So early!  Anyway, I went back to the store, swallowed my pride, and purchased a couple of SWAT vests.  To make up for it, I made a SWAT vehicle out of some cardboard boxes and our wagon. The boys had fun riding in it (correction, Beckham actually refused to ride in it, but Chase had fun), and it was easy to pull around while trick or treating.
When my mom decided to come visit for Halloween, Chase had the idea to include her in the costume fun and asked her to be the bad guy!
A few things about the vehicle, incase you are wanting to make one of your own:
I used washing machine boxes from Lowes.  If you call Lowes early in the morning when they are unloading their shipments, they will save boxes for you for free!
Lots of hot glue.  Hot glue is my very best friend, especially when it comes to making cardboard creations!
I spray painted it, which I have found works much better than painting it with a brush.
I printed and cut out the SWAT letters, then used double stick tape to secure them to the vehicle.
The front brush guard is made from cardboard wrapping paper rolls.
The lights are made from wrapping aluminum foil over a pice of cardboard.  The blue and red lights are just colored paper.
For the wheels, I spray painted water bottle caps with silver paint then hot glued them on to look like lug nuts.
Because the wheels and the vehicle are black, I wanted to give the wheels little more dimension, so I folded up cardboard, and glued it behind the wheel to separate it a little bit from the body of the truck.
I used pieces from a fort building kit to act as a frame, holding up the cardboard over the wagon.  You could easily use dowel rods too!  Our wagon has a canopy so the fort sticks fit perfectly in the canopy holes and supported the cardboard so it wouldn’t drag on the ground.
All in all, it was a great Halloween!
Well, until my oldest threw up later that evening after eating too much candy.
But what’s Halloween without a little barf?
