DIY Halloween Bats

September 22, 2019
I’m so excited the weather has finally cooled off a little bit and things are starting to feel like fall!  One of our favorite things about fall is Halloween!  My boys love getting the decorations out each year. Playing with all of the spooky things and remembering their favorites from year to year is what memories are made of.

I have been looking for Halloween bats for a couple of years. When I couldn’t find any that I liked, I turned to Pinterest for some DIY inspo.  I found a template and proceeded to make LOTS of bats!  I’ll walk you through it incase you are in the mood to sprinkle bats all over your house this season too!

You will need:
black cardstock, and a piece or two of white card stock, if you have it on hand.
scissors
tape or ticky tacky
pencil
printer to print out the template
ruler

Print the bat template onto a piece of white cardstock. Using a thicker paper like cardstock makes it easier to trace, but if you don’t have cardstock, regular paper would work too. I used this template that I found from onegoodthingbyjillee.com.

After cutting out the white bat, use it to trace a bat onto the black cardstock.  A pencil shows up pretty well on the black cardstock.  I opted for two different sizes of bats. To alter the size, change the print scale to 75%, then repeat the steps above. You could do as many different sizes as you like!

It actually didn’t take as long as I thought it would to cut out all of the bats. Watching Bachelor in Paradise while cutting seemed to make it go faster. Ha!  So pour a glass of wine, choose your guilty pleasure, and start cutting!

Once all of the bats are cut, use a ruler, or something with a stiff, straight edge to bend them in a few places for a 3D effect.  Put the ruler on the side of the body and fold the wing upward to create a crease in the paper. Repeat with the other side.  Then using the same method, place your ruler in the middle of the wing and fold it backwards, in the opposite direction. This will allow you to tape the body of the bat to the wall while the wings can stand out, away from the wall.

Now comes the fun part!  Arrange the bats how you like them!  I decided on a diagonal flight pattern for mine. Because they are so lightweight, you can use tape or ticky tacky to secure your bats, which also gives you the flexibility to move them around as you arrange them.

I again found a design I liked on Pinterest, then tried to draw a similar one on a piece of black poster board.  I cut them out and taped them behind an old, vintage window.  I think they look so neat against my faux shiplap wallpaper wall!

It was a fun project, extremely inexpensive, and I am SO happy with how it turned out!  I finally have my wall of bats!  Let me know if you make any bats of your own.  I’d love to see them!
