DIY Disinfecting Wipes

April 30, 2020

Well, I have covered my basis as far as DIY hand sanitizer, so I figured it was time to move onto wipes. 😂 I mean considering our world is revolving around how to SANITIZE EVERYTHING, it’s only natural I am thinking about it 24/7. I started out with a couple of canisters of Clorox and Lysol brand disinfecting wipes, but they are diminishing and becoming hard to find. Not to mention, I wasn’t exactly excited to use them regularly because of the chemicals they contain.

I saved the empty canisters and decided to make my own version of disinfecting wipes, according to the CDC recommendations for killing the Coronavirus. It’s actually quite easy, and I can rest easy knowing that the kitchen counter doesn’t have germs OR toxins on it!

Let’s chat about alcohol. I mentioned this in my Non-Toxic Hand Sanitizer post, but you can use either isopropyl alcohol, which is what you find at the pharmacy, or you can use ethyl alcohol (ethanol), which is consumable (think Everclear brand grain alcohol). I am choosing to use the grain alcohol because I am wanting to avoid the chemicals that are added to isopropyl. But, if that’s all you have on hand, you can still make your own wipes that are less toxic than the name brand ones!

The CDC recommends that your mixture contain at least 70% alcohol, so depending on the potency of your alcohol, you will need to ensure the final product is 70%.

The grain alcohol I am using is Clear Springs 190 proof, which is 95% alcohol. That’s well over the recommended amount, so I am going to add a little water to my mixture, But, if you have 70% rubbing alcohol in your medicine cabinet, you can still use it, just use all alcohol, and no water.

Certain essential oils are know for their disinfecting properties like being antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antiseptic, and deodorizing. I added some essential oils mainly for scent, but I chose ones that are known for these disinfecting properties just as an added boost! Some of these oils include but are not limited to:

  • eucalyptus
  • lavender
  • tea tree
  • lemon
  • rosemary
  • peppermint
  • thyme

Another thing I have learned since making the hand sanitizer is that adding just .5% Hydrogen Peroxide to your alcohol can boost the ability to efficiently inactivate viruses!

You will need:

  • Canister for your wipes. I used a leftover Lysol container, but you can use anything you have on hand. Just be sure if it’s plastic and you are using essential oils, that it’s either plastic #1 HDPE or plastic #2 PET. Essential oils can break down other types of plastic over time and leech the chemicals into your wipes.
  • Good quality paper towels (select a size works best)
  • 2 cups of 190 proof grain alcohol
  • 1/2 cup distilled water
  • 1 tsp Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
  • Essential oils (optional). I used 10 drops each of lemon, eucalyptus, and rosemary.

How to make your own disinfecting wipes:

Mix all ingredients in the canister.

Using a serrated knife, cut the paper towels to fit in the canister.

Depending on the size of your canister, you may have to roll off some of the paper towels. I waited until our roll in the kitchen was about the right width, then just used that. For the part that gets cut off, I usually end up finding some way to utilize them! They never go to waste.

Place the paper towel roll into the canister, cover, and let it soak up the liquid. After the paper towels are saturated, gently pull the cardboard tube out from the center. You will pull the paper towels up from the center to get them started. Place the lid back on and you’re all set!

I use these disinfecting wipes on the kitchen counter, tables, doorknobs, refrigerator, sink, bathrooms, remote controls, light switches, and even in my car! They are super handy to have around and the best part is they don’t have any unpronounceable ingredients!

Let me know if you make any and what essential oil blends you prefer!
