Thank you to Aestheticare for gifting a miraDry treatment to me. All opinions are my own.

I sweat. And when I sweat, I stink. I am not the lucky person who can forget the deodorant and be fine for the day without it. In fact, I used to keep a travel size deodorant in my car at all times for emergencies! But that was all before miraDry! I haven’t used antiperspirant in years, after learning it contains aluminum, which has been linked to Alzheimers and breast cancer. I got used to having underarm sweat, but with sweat, comes odor. And that, I could never get used to! After years of trying various natural deodorants, I did finally find one I love (Native), but I usually had to reapply in the afternoon to prevent the stench from starting to creep in that evening.
When Aestheticare asked if I would like to try out their miraDry treatment, I shouted YES! I definitely jumped at the chance to eliminate, or greatly reduce, my underarm sweat! I mean, who wouldn’t?
miraDry uses microwave energy to target and eliminate sweat glands in the treated area. The doctor or nurse will mark the area, making a personalized treatment plan geared towards maximum results for your underarm. Lidocaine is injected into the area to numb it and make the procedure more comfortable. Once you are numb, the treatment wand slightly sucks up an area of the skin, pulses the microwave energy, then releases and the doctor or nurse continues this process for the entire underarm area.
Does it hurt?
The most painful part of the procedure was having the lidocaine injected. The nurse has to administer several pokes to get the lidocaine spread evenly throughout the treatment area. The actual procedure with the miraDry wand didn’t hurt at all.
After the procedure, I was pretty numb until early evening, when it started to wear off. That’s when my armpits started to feel pretty spicy and swollen. Icing helped tremendously, and I just rotated ice packs until I went to sleep that evening. Ibuprofen also helped reduce the swelling and take the edge off. I was able to sleep that night without any issues.
The following morning, my armpits were very swollen and sore. This was probably the worst day. They advise you to wear loose clothing, but I found it more comfortable to wear a super soft, thin, tight fitting long sleeved shirt. Having that shirt barrier felt much better than skin on skin. I continued to ice and take Ibuprofen on day 2.
Day 3, the pain was reduced dramatically. I was still pretty swollen, but just slightly tender. And each day after that gradually improved. As advised, I waited a full week to workout. My armpits were still sensitive, but there was no real pain. I avoided exercises that would require my arms to rub and aggravate the area.
After two weeks, there was still a minor bit of swelling and a touch of a numb/tender feeling when the area is rubbed. Definiltey no pain, per se, but just kind of an odd sensation that should go away over time.
Does it work?
I can excitedly say YES! Most women can get away with just one miraDry treatment, while men generally need two to get the desired outcome. I have only had one treatment, and I am super happy with the results! I have tested my stinky-ness to the max by not wearing deodorant, and one of my armpits has ZERO smell, while the other one has the slightest twinge of body odor only after a hard workout. If I am just going about my day to day business, I can get away without wearing deodorant and feel completely confident that I don’t smell!
Don’t we need to sweat?
Yes, our bodies do need to sweat. It’s how we cool off and expel toxins. However, our underarms contain only about 2% of our body’s total sweat glands. miraDry targets only those sweat glands under your arms, so you will still sweat everywhere else.
When do you notice results?
Immediately! The treatment eliminates the sweat and odor glands on contact, so I noticed results right away! Once the glands are eliminated, they are gone for good!
How long does the treatment take?
Mine took about an hour, including the time to numb and treat both underarms. It was fairly quick!
How does this differ from using Botox to prevent sweat?
Botox is temporary. Injecting the botulism toxin into your armpits will usually stop the sweating for 3-6 months. miraDry is permanent!
How much does it cost?
Cost varies by med spa. Aestheticare currently charges $1750 for the first treatment, and $1500 if you need a second treatment. During their event (Sept 20-24, 2021), you can save 15%!
All in all, I am super happy with the results. It was pretty uncomfortable for about 48 hours, but SO worth it! Stock up on ice packs, and make a list of Netflix shows to binge, and you’ll be just fine!
