Applesauce Fruit Roll-ups

November 8, 2017

Ten Apples Up on Top!  Have you read that book?  It’s by Dr Seuss and my son has been requesting it before bed a lot lately.  Not sure if he’s choosing it because we have been eating a LOT of apples, or if it’s purely coincidence!

After I shared our Instant Pot Applesauce recipe a couple of weeks ago, we have been eating a lot of the stuff.  I think the boys are starting to get a little sick of it (sorry boys!), so I had to get creative because I wasn’t going to let that goodness go to waste!  No ma’am.

Enter, applesauce fruit roll-ups!  I’ll admit I was a little hesitant that they would turn out.  I assumed after baking in the oven for an entire day, they would be hard, rubbery and pull out any fillings you may have.  But, surprisingly, they were JUST like the ones you buy from the store, only without the preservatives and mystery ingredients!  #fruitrollupsforthewin

So, if you’re looking for yet another way to use up all of those delicious apples, here ya go!  It’s probably the easiest recipe ever.

Applesauce (I used about 3-4 cups per pan)

Line a lipped cookie sheet with a silicon mat or parchment paper.  Spread the applesauce evenly over  the mat, be sure to try and keep it evenly distributed, especially along the edges.   Cook for 6-8 hours at 170°.

The key is low and slow.  Turn your oven down as low as it will go.  For me, that was 170°.  It will cook slowly, and dehydrate the sauce gradually.

If it is crunchy on the edges, you can brush some water over the top and it will moisten up again.  I had to do that on the edges, and it worked like a charm!

Let it cool completely, then you can cut them into strips and roll them up in parchment paper or wax paper. Store in a ziplock baggie to retain moisture!
