And A Happy New Year

I hope you all had a GREAT holiday season and a fun New Year's Eve!  We stayed in and celebrated with just the four of us this year.  It ended up being really fun thanks to some great ideas I found on Pinterest!  Gosh, WHAT did we do before Pinterest?  We made it to midnight (even Beckham stayed up!), but I was draaaaaaggggging.  It's pretty sad when your 8 year old can hang longer than you can.  #gettingold

I am not one to get really hung up on making resolutions for the New Year.  I mentioned on social media last week that I was inspired by this post from Pinch of Yum, talking about cutting back on sugar, and so at the literal last minute, I jumped on the bandwagon and am trying to be conscious of my sugar intake.  I have previously done a sugar detox and Whole 30, so it's not a new concept to me, but I liked her take on the whole thing and how she's not being SUPER strict with it.  Rather she wants to be aware of what she puts in her mouth with the ultimate goal being to reset her palate and hopefully not need/crave as much sugar in the future.

Last year I decided to make a goal for myself of improving my posture.  I have to say that ended up being a hard one!  Still to this day, I find myself slouching and humping over.  But, the point is to become aware of the things you want to change, and I am definitely aware of it, trying to correct myself when I can.  I will say that once the temperatures started cooling down this fall, I noticed myself slouching more.  Kind of a strange observation, but I guess it's my body's way of trying to get cozy.  I do feel like my posture is slightly better now than it was a year ago, but there's still room for improvement.

After doing some thinking about New Year's goals and if I was even going to bother with one this year, I found a book that I had purchased a few months ago.  A book that was written for mamas to help us take some time for ourselves and help us deal with day to day situations that every mother encounters.  And guess what?  I hadn't even cracked the cover.  It was sitting there, on my kitchen counter, under a pile of papers and bills, collecting dust.

So, this is going to be my New Year's resolution...to actually read this (and hopefully a couple of other books).  The book Breathe Mama Breathe is written in small chapters with the idea that us moms don't have a lot of time to sit down and read a novel.  Most chapters can be read in 5 minutes.  Surely, I can find 5 minutes a day to do this!

I have been getting up at 5am 4-5 mornings a week to go to my barre class.  I am thinking my best chance at actually sticking to this goal is to read a chapter or two immediately when I get home from my workout.  I might even keep the book in the car and sit in my garage while I read it.   Sounds silly, but once I cross the threshold into my house, a thousand distractions await...the dishwasher needs to be unloaded, lunches need to be packed, a load of laundry needs to be started, toys need to be picked up, and the list goes on.  So, I think I am going to sit in my car and read.  Everyone is still sleeping when I get home, so it will be the perfect opportunity to take advantage of those 5 minutes.

I actually have a whole list of books that have intrigued me, but knowing myself, and the fact that I don't usually enjoy reading for pleasure, I have held off purchasing them until I make it through this one.  But, I wanted to share them incase you have already read Breathe Mama Breathe and are looking for something else along the same line.

Loving the Little Years
Love Unending
Streams in the Desert
Hope Unfolding
Of Mess and Moxie
Out of the Spin Cycle

Do you have any recommendations for other books I should be reading?  What are your resolutions for the new year?
