How I Organized our Toy Room

Ahhhh, the toy room.  It's a necessity around here, but also can be the thorn in my side.  I love it and hate it.  It's a blessing and a curse.

I try not to get too crazy about the neatness of the toy room simply because it's THE TOY ROOM.  But, it is visible from our living room and kitchen, and honestly, the OCD in me, (which I have been suppressing deep deep down inside my soul ever since I had children), comes out periodically and I feel the need to organize it so I don't go insane.  Although, this is such a waste of time because the items only stay in their cubbies for as long as my son is napping.  20 minutes after he wakes, it looks like a war zone again.  But, for a short, very short, period of time, I feel like the world has order.  And, sometimes I just need some order.

I wanted to share a few things that have helped contain some of the chaos in our toy room.
But, before we get started, I want you to know that this room rarely looks like the picture above.  Rarely.  It usually looks more like this:

However, considering this post is about organizing, I figured I wouldn't really seem credible if I posted real life pictures ;)  Don't worry, approximately 10 minutes after I shot these photos, the boys were back in here, ready to play again!  They just love this corner!

Ok, let's get started!

First up is this shelf from IKEA (the tall one in the middle).  The instructions were interesting, with only pictures and no words, but once I got the hang of it, I was pretty sure I could assemble an entire kitchen cabinet set with the tiny allen wrench they provided.  This shelving unit comes in different sizes and colors, and even has the option for some built-in looking drawers or doors if your looking for a more polished look.  We chose the  Drona bins because, well, it's THE TOY ROOM.  The bins are pretty sturdy and hold a lot more stuff than the bins I have purchased at Target.  The smaller shelves on either side are both from Target, and as you can see, they are not as nice, flimsier, and the bins are smaller.  But, they do the job for now.   We used heavy duty zip ties to secure the TV to the shelf so it wouldn't fall over, and the IKEA shelf is mounted to the wall for the same reason.

We have a nice set of built in shelves that we use for books.  I use the upper shelves for a lot of Chase's things, which are not age appropriate for Beckham...science kits, microscope, etc.

I purchased the large woven baskets from Target several years ago.  At our previous house, we kept books in one and toys in the other, but now we just throw random toys in both.  They have held up well and hold a lot of stuff.  I couldn't find the exact bins online anymore, but I found a couple of similar options here and here.  One of these days I'll get around to changing the labels...maybe.

I converted this old TV armoire into my computer/desk area.  I like that I can close the doors to keep little fingers off of my computer and important papers.  It also allows me to close off my mess!  I rigged the printer by screwing a wire shelf upside down onto the upper shelf.  It's perfect to hold the printer and keep it out of the way to give me more space on the desktop.

The couch in here is also from IKEA.  It actually converts to a sofa bed and has storage underneath the cushions.  We wanted something that wasn't very expensive...a place to sit, but I didn't want to worry if something was spilled on it.  And, it's a good thing because within a week of owning this beauty, my son christened it by puking on it.  Yep. That's how life goes around here!  Eventually, I want to find something to hang above it, but I haven't seen the perfect piece yet.

And, that random extra chair was actually an old ottoman from a sectional we had several years ago.  I converted it into a chair by screwing plywood to the back and then covered it in foam and material.  It's kind of an odd shape, but it's fun and whimsical, and gives us some extra seating in here!  And, once again, I don't care if it gets messed up or jumped on.  Moroccan tile rug here.

So, that's about it.  Despite the usual mess, this is actually my favorite room in the house.  With windows all the way around, it lets in so much natural light and is just a great space to hang out.  We spend so much time in here!

What are some things you do to help organize the toys and clutter?

P.S. For those of you expecting Workin' It Wednesday today, it has been postponed until March 20.  A close friend of the link-up host passed away, so they took some time off to be with family and friends.
