DIY: Homemade Deodorant

Why on earth would you want to make your own deodorant when you can go to the store and buy some for just a few bucks?  Well, the truth is, most deodorants and antiperspirants on the market contain a number of toxic ingredients.

1. Aluminum
Aluminum is linked to a variety of health problems, including cancer, but the one I am most concerned about is it's link with Alzheimer's Disease.  Many of you know that I have personal connection with Alzheimer's because my dad was affected by it at a relatively young age.  The rise in dementia related illnesses and cancer is concerning, so the more I can do to try to lessen the cause, the better.

2. Phthalates
These chemical plasticizers help lotions and other personal care products penetrate the skin, but they have been linked to an increase in asthma, hormone disruption, and certain cancers.

3.  Parabens
Parabens are used as a preservative and shelf stabilizer.  They are linked to hormone imbalance, hormone related cancers, birth defects and organ toxicity.  Parabens are in EVERYTHING!   Finally, we are starting to see more and more companies changing the recipes for their products to exclude parabens, but there are still so many personal care products that still include them.

4. Triclosan
This has been classified as a pesticide by the FDA and classified as a carcinogen by the EPA.  Up until last year, this was included in all antibacterial soaps and washes.   Hooray for the FDA for taking a step in the right direction and banning triclosan from hand soaps, bar soaps, and body washes!

5. Propylene glycol
Another chemical stabilizer which can cause damage to the central nervous system, liver, and heart.

In an effort to avoid as many of these icky, unnecessary ingredients as I can, I set out to find a deodorant with ingredients I could trust and pronounce.   A friend sent me this super easy recipe and the best part is IT ACTUALLY WORKS!  I have tried numerous different "natural" deodorants out there, and most of them were very disappointing.  They left me feeling stinky and frustrated.  This is not an antiperspirant, so you will still sweat, but that is a good thing.  Clogging up your pores  and preventing them from releasing the sweat is not good for your body.  After a workout, or if it's a hot summer day, I do have to reapply in the afternoon.  For me, this is a small inconvenience that will hopefully help avoid any potential health problems later on.

I know it seems much easier to just run to Target and buy deodorant, or have Amazon deliver it to your doorstep, but in all honesty, this recipe is sooooo easy and you can still have Amazon deliver all of the ingredients to your doorstep.  I waited several months before even reading the recipe after it was shared with me because I thought it would be a pain to make my own deodorant, but once I realized how simple it was, I made my first batch and have been making it on repeat now for the past couple of years.

3 Ingredient Homemade Deodorant:
1/3 cup Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
1/3 cup Arrowroot powder
2 Tbsp Baking soda
Essential oils (optional)--15-20 drops

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and stir well to combine.  I have found that it works best if your coconut oil is left solid, at room temperature.  Do not heat it up or all of the arrowroot powder and baking soda will sink to the bottom of your deodorant jars.

If it's hard to mix, just keep at it and it will start to loosen up and get softer.  A mini arm workout.  You're welcome ;)

Once it is thoroughly combined, scoop it into your container.  This recipe fills 2 (2oz) jars like these.  Many times I don't add any essential oils, but when I do, I like to use lemongrass oil.  This particular oil is rather potent, so I only add about 5-7 drops.

To apply, just use your finger to scoop a large pea sized amount and use your hand to rub it under your arms.  If it is hard, it will quickly warm up with the warmth of your skin and spread more easily.

If you aren't feeling overly hippy and just can't bring yourself to make your own deodorant, I highly recommend Primal Pit Paste as a good alternative to the homemade stuff.  I used it for a couple of years and I was pleased with it.  In fact, I saved the empty jars and that's what I have been using to store my homemade stuff!  Primal Pit Paste offers a jar and stick variety, but I prefer the jar because the consistency of the stick deodorant is too sticky for me.  Even though it may be weird at first to apply it with your hands, you'll soon get used to it!

If you're interested in checking out your deodorant or antiperspirant ingredients, the Environmental Working Group is a great resource.  You can look up products you are currently using as well as get recommendations on products you would like to try.

Fun in the SUNhats

Spring is here!

I wanted to share a few fun hats that I have been loving for spring and summer time.  If you are planning a spring or summer getaway to somewhere warm, then you definitely need a cute hat to come with you!  And, at the bottom of the post, I'll show you how to pack your hat in your suitcase to avoid crushing it.

I've seen this hat a few times, but the cost of the original is $495.  I have no business paying that kind of money for 1 sunhat, that would probably get crushed in my suitcase, or with my luck a bird would end up pooping on it.   --Sidenote, I actually have had a bird poop on my head twice in my lifetime (so far).  It' no fun I can tell you that!  And, unfortunately I didn't have a hat on either time.  Getting back on track...I've seen a couple of DIY posts about people making their own, and they turn out pretty cute, so I was considering trying it out.  But, then as I was perusing Target's website recently, I stumbled upon this beauty!  And, as you can guess, it was nowhere near $495.  Try under $20!  Man I love Target!  Here's another option.

I've always loved the look of fedoras, but I never thought my head was the right shape to pull them off.  They always seems to look as if they were floating above my head, or like I had an elongated shaped head, much like Burt from Sesame Street.  I found this Panama hat and I love it!  The brim is wider and floppier then a traditional fedora, so I think that helps balance out the height.  It was super comfy and stayed on my head in the wind much better then a large brimmed sunhat.  It's very Cuban looking, so if you are going anywhere with a Latin culture, you should definitely pack one of these!

I love my traditional sunhat with a golden flare.  This is a favorite hat because it provides a lot of shade on my face and shoulders.  I purchased mine a few years ago, but I found some others with fun flare!  mint stripe / wovenpom pom / watermelon.  I really like large sun hats for their shading abilities, but sometimes they get carried away with a big gust of wind!

Lastly, I recently picked up this cadet hat and I have loved it!  It's been nice to throw on when I don't feel like fixing (or washing) my hair, and it's a little more stylish then a standard baseball cap.  It's not too tight on my head and the brim is a little bit smaller, which I like.

Now that you have these cute hats to wear your tropical vacation, how on earth are you supposed to get them there?   If it's not a huge hat, I often wear it on the plane.  I wore the Panama hat on the plane for my last trip and it was very comfy.  The bonus of wearing a hat on the plane is that you don't have to fix your hair...which is a huge plus when you have to wake up at 4am to catch your flight!

Here's my plane outfit: jeans / tunic / hat / bracelet / flats / cardigan (not pictured)

A large sunhat might be a little more obnoxious to wear on a plane though.  The best way I have found to pack a hat is to stuff the inside of it with clothing that won't wrinkle, or items that you don't mind if they are wrinkly.

I use my swimsuits, pajamas, underwear, socks, etc.  Stuff them inside of the hat to help it hold the shape.  Then place the hat down in the suitcase first.

The brim will stay nice and flat, and the stuffing will help prevent the rest of it from being crushed.

Pack your clothing around it and you are good to go!

All of this talk about warm weather is making me want to plan another vacation!  Summer can't come fast enough!

Bombers are the Bomb

I am loving the bomber jackets that have hit the stores recently!  So cute, and a great little lightweight jacket to help carry us into spring.

Workin' It Wednesday: Balancing Home and Work Life

Hey, hey hey!  It's time to link up with Shay and Erika again for Workin' It Wednesday.  Yes, you're right...today is not Wednesday.  But, a friend of the link up hosts passed away, so they took some time off to be with friends and family.  Today's topic: Balancing work and home life.  Well, I technically don't have a job...so I'm not really sure I should be writing this post.  But.....I am hoping to possibly turn this little hobby of a blog into a money maker one day, so I have been trying to treat it like a job.  Currently, a very part time job, but a job nonetheless.

Home life.  For me, that entails spending most of my day with my little munchkin, Beckham (while Chase is in school).  He's a sweet little guy with a serious side of spice.  He recently started scolding me for calling him dude or sweetheart or anything other than Beckham.  That's been hard to get used to!  Sassy with a capital S!  But, he's so much fun and I have really enjoyed being able to stay home with both of my boys while they are young.  I enjoy it, but that doesn't mean every second is just purely blissful.  There are many, MANY times that I want to pull my hair out.  Being a stay at home mom definitely has tried my level of patience time and time again.  There have been moments that I have daydreamed about being able to get dressed in nice clothes, go into an office and have adult conversations by the water cooler, talk on the phone and type on the computer without interruptions, go to lunch with a co-worker...and then I awake from said daydream to find that someone has taken it upon himself to remove his own diaper and use the playroom floor as the toilet.  Back to reality.

Lovin Lately: Accessories Edition

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I don't have a single drop of Irish in my blood, but I enjoy any excuse to have a cocktail and some yummy food with friends and family!  I hope you have had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend.  Today kickstarts Spring Break for us here in Kansas City, so we are spending time with cousins who are here visiting and then we will get to see my brand new nephew next week!  I can't wait to sniff his newborn head!  Anyone else have a crazy obsession with sniffing babies?  I used to just hold my boys and take long, deep breaths to inhale all of the goodness I possibly could when they were babies.  There's just nothing else like it in the world!  Baby smells are my drug.

Anyway, this week I wanted to share some of the accessories I've been loving lately.

If you have been living under a rock and haven't checked out the Sugarfix collection at Target, then you need to get there ASAP!  Or at the very least, hop online!  Their collab with BaubleBar is spot on.  So many cute things to choose from.  And, jewelry is currently 20% off at Target right now!  Here are some of my faves:

DIY: Individual Trash Cups for Your Car

Do you have an upcoming road trip...Spring Break perhaps?  Then, you desperately need individual trash cups for your car!

I am a bit of a neat freak.  Granted, I've had to give up a lot of my tidiness after having children for the sake of my own sanity, but I do still enjoy a quick fix of cleanliness and organization.  After constantly having to clean out my car from all of the random wrappers, napkins, wipes, snacks, etc, I finally decided to give each passenger their OWN individual trash cup.  This may sound like a very insignificant thing, but it has been a life changer!  It's the small things people!  They make a big difference.  Here's how I conquered random car trash:

Fashion Friday: Vacation Outfit Ideas Part 2

Well hello again!  Have you been waiting ALLLLLLL week in anticipation of the next round of vacation outfit ideas?  I can just feel you at the edge of your seat, ready to dive in.  (no sarcasm at all)  If you missed last week's post, you can check it out HERE.

Nothing says beach vacay better then a flowy floral maxi dress!  Act like you're in Hawaii, even if you're not.  This one is from H&M several years ago.  Here are some similar options:  1 / 2 / 3

As you have probably noticed, I love to wear colorful things when I'm on vacation!  These orange crop jeans are super fun and surprisingly, they go with a lot of different tops!
Orange crops / Similar topBracelets: arrow / rhinestone / cuff  / similar earrings

Similar studded gladiator sandals: 1 / 2  / 3  / nail polish

As I mentioned last week, I love the versatility of certain pieces that I travel with.  I can wear the black maxi dress (mentioned in last week's post) as a swimsuit coverup, or out to dinner.  This black top is officially a swimsuit coverup, but with a black cami underneath, I like to wear it as a shirt.  Similar top and here / similar shorts: 1 / 2 / 3

I wear these gladiator sandals all the time.  They are from Target last year, but they are super comfy and easy to slip on quickly.  Similar studded gladiator sandals: 1 / 2

And just for kicks, here are some outtakes.  I am obviously not a model, so it's super awkward for me to stand there and have pictures taken of myself.  But I can laugh at myself, so I thought you'd enjoy laughing with me ;)
(Um, what do I do with my hands?  / Breaking into an awkward dance when a fellow hotel guest walks by / What's that strange tickle up my nose?  Oh yeah, my own hair.  This modeling thing is not as easy as it looks! ha!)
Thanks for checking out my vacation outfit posts!  If you are headed somewhere fun for Spring Break, I hope you have a fun and safe vacation!

How I Organized our Toy Room

Ahhhh, the toy room.  It's a necessity around here, but also can be the thorn in my side.  I love it and hate it.  It's a blessing and a curse.

I try not to get too crazy about the neatness of the toy room simply because it's THE TOY ROOM.  But, it is visible from our living room and kitchen, and honestly, the OCD in me, (which I have been suppressing deep deep down inside my soul ever since I had children), comes out periodically and I feel the need to organize it so I don't go insane.  Although, this is such a waste of time because the items only stay in their cubbies for as long as my son is napping.  20 minutes after he wakes, it looks like a war zone again.  But, for a short, very short, period of time, I feel like the world has order.  And, sometimes I just need some order.

Traveling with Toddlers

Spring break is nearing, and I'm sure many of you are planning your spring getaways.  We beat the rush and went to Mexico in February, so since I have recently been through the experience of traveling with young children, I wanted to pass on a few things that helped keep me sane.

Fashion Friday: Vacation Outfit Ideas / Part 1

Ok all of you soon-to-be spring breakers!  I'm starting to get jealous of you because we aren't going anywhere exotic or warm this year for spring break.  We are heading to Arkansas to see family, but that's not exactly what I would call exotic.  I can't really complain because we were able to get out of the winter cold earlier this year, but all of this talk about other people's beach plans has me wanting to book another trip!  I need to get a job that actually pays me so that I can afford to take more vacations.

If you are heading somewhere warm, I wanted to share some outfit ideas with you!  I decided to break this post up into 2 parts.  It was getting rather lengthy and the last thing I would ever want to do is BORE you while talking about clothes!  So tune in next week for part 2.

First up is the classic black maxi dress.  Can't go wrong with this baby!  So versatile...dress it up or down, wear it as a swimsuit coverup, add a cardigan...the possibilities are endless!

My exact dress is old, but there are several awesome options out there!
1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / Panama hat / similar necklaces: 1 / 2 / 3 / cuff bracelet / earrings
