New Year's Resolutions: Make 'em or Break 'em?

I hope everyone had an amazing holiday and got to spend time with the people you love!  Personally, this was the most fun Christmas yet.  My whole family came to KC and it was so fun to have them all there on Christmas morning!  The boys are at a very fun age and enjoyed both opening gifts and also giving gifts to others.  But now the magic is settling and reality is setting in, time to find homes for the new items we received, clean up my disaster of a house, and stop eating 5000 calories a day. Booooo.

Favorite Shimmery Red Polish and Santa Talk

I have a love hate relationship with nail polish.  I absolutely love having my nails painted.  It's just such a girlie thing, and I really enjoy how they look, all pretty and shiny.  But, it just doesn't last!  Even gel polish doesn't last long for me.  All of the hand washing, dish washing, kid washing just takes a toll.  At any rate, I still continue to paint them...when I can.  I seem to gravitate to OPI colors the most.  I used to love So Ho Nice to Meet You, which was almost identical to this color I am wearing today.

Snow Day

I remember when I was a kid, what a wonderful feeling it was when school was cancelled and you had nothing to do but play in the snow!  No homework, no tests, nowhere to go...just play.  It was like the BEST gift you could ever get!  Snow came earlier then normal this year, and we took advantage of lots of playtime, despite the arctic temps outside.

We started the day with a gingerbread house that our elf brought.  Like most gingerbread houses I've had experience with, it was almost impossible to get it to stand up on it's own, so they agreed to decorate it in parts and we would put it together later...only we could NEVER get it to stand up.  Oh well.  It wasn't for lack of trying.

Christmas Card Keepsake

One of my favorite traditions during the holidays is sending and receiving cards.  A lot of people are just sending cards via email or social media these days, but I still enjoy sending an actual piece of paper through the old fashioned mail system.  I love getting other people's cards in the mail also!

The Proper Way to Set a Table

My parents sent me and both of my brothers to cotillion classes when we were younger.  I suppose in an effort to shape us into proper young adults.  I think it worked...well, for the most part!  I may not always mind my manners, but at least I know what I am supposed to be doing!  We learned a variety of things from manners, to dance moves, to how to set a table.  As I was thinking of this article, I realized that maybe more of the lessons stuck with me then I had originally thought.  I may not know all of the steps to the Waltz anymore, but after doing some research online to verify my ideas about proper table settings, I surprised myself by how much I actually remembered.

If you are hosting Christmas dinner, and have found yourself wondering, "Where in the heck do I put the little fork?", then keep reading because I'll tell ya!

DIY: Hand Santa-tizer

I came across this super cute idea from Stamping Rules for Hand Santa-tizer and I just knew this is what I wanted to give Chase's teacher and school faculty this year for the holidays.  It's so cute, and since the schools have hand sanitizer at every corner, I thought it would be very festive, but also very practical.

Stocking Stuffers!

So...we only have 15 days left until Christmas morning!!!  Are you still making lists for everyone, trying to figure out what to buy, or are you one of those people who have all of your ducks in a row and can sit back and relax while everyone else is frantically shopping at the last minute?  I did the majority of my shopping online this year.  With all of the free shipping offers and online coupon codes, it was just too easy to stay in the comfort of my home and shop from my couch!  And, not having to drag a toddler around from store to store is a huge plus too.  Can I get 3 shouts for Amazon Prime!?!?!?  How did we ever live without it?  Sometimes I feel like my Amazon bill is a close 2nd to my mortgage payment.  Eeeeek.  Maybe they make it a little too easy if you know what I mean!

DIY: Birdseed Wreath

Do you give gifts to your neighbors?  We, (ahem, I) usually bake something yummy and then we go around with the boys and deliver the goods.  In the past, it's been either cinnamon rolls or my grandmother's famous Pig Out Cookies.  But this year, in light of trying to be more conscious of the amount of sugar I consume, I opted for a non-edible gift.  Well, not edible for us anyway.  Because even though I would try really hard to avoid "taste testing" the goodies, I know myself too well.   One cookie leads to two, then two leads to four, and...well, you get my point.  The holidays bring so many opportunities for sweets and treats, so I'm sure my neighbors will appreciate that we are changing it up this year.  This would also be a great gift for a family with food allergies!

Party Time!

Are you going to any holiday parties this season?  If so, you may want to check out these uber cute items I have found for your shopping pleasure.  There are lots of cute things out right now, and it's so fun to imagine myself going to a fancy cocktail party at a 5 star restaurant on the top floor of a luxury hotel with an amazing view and an open bar.  I have to imagine because this is not actually happening.  A girl can dream though!  There's still time to plan something fun for NYE, so maybe I'll set my sights on that.  I do get to go to a holiday party for Adam's work, and I'm looking forward to that.  Parent's night out!  Love you kiddos, but every now and then it's nice to have conversations about something other then tractors and legos.  It's a little more on the casual side, but I still like to get semi-gussied up just because I can.  And, because I don't get to dress up that often anymore!

I love, love, love this dress!  It would be flattering on so many body types.  And, the color!  Love!

Cheeseburger Soup

Cold weather just calls for soup.  I am a fan of hearty soups, ones that are satisfying and fill me up.  This cheeseburger soup does just that!  Cheeseburgers are in my husband's top 3 favorite foods, along with crab legs and steak.  He has to have one at least once a week or he starts to get the shakes.  I'll admit though, sometimes I get sick of eating them.  I do appreciate a good burger, but I don't have the desire to eat them quiiiiiiite so often.  So, what's a girl to do?  Get creative!  This soup may have some of the same ingredients as a standard cheeseburger, but at least it changes things up a bit!  So, when it's too cold to grill outside, whip up a batch of this easy peasy soup and stay cozy warm inside.

The Makings of a Family Photo

Well, it's that time of year again...time to pick out coordinating outfits.  Not too matchy, but similar enough that they won't clash.  Time to sweet talk my sister in law into coming to take a few quick pictures of us in hopes that we can get one, just ONE, decent picture to send to family and friends.  You would think that getting one good picture would be easy as pie.  Well, let me tell you...pie is freaking hard to make!  Have you ever made one?  Very labor intensive.  Anyway, back to family photos.  They aren't exactly easy either.  Choosing the outfits is the easy part.  Getting people to wear the chosen outfits is another story.  I have to pick clothing items that meet everyone's favorite color likings, which is why most of our pictures are in green and or blue outfits.  Buuuuut, you pick your battles, so I try to appease them with the color choices in order to have leverage over demanding smiles and acting like we all adore each other, even when the 2 littles were fighting just a few minutes prior.

So, when you get all of those picture perfect holiday cards in the mail this year, just know that it's a pretty safe bet the large majority of them went through a lot of pain and suffering to get that one perfect shot!  Heres a little glimpse at our pain and suffering:

DIY: Glitter Fruit That Won't Get Glitter All Over Your House

I love glittery things.  Maybe it's a girl thing.  Or maybe it's the fact that I have 2 boys and nothing around here is glittery anymore so my need for sparkly things is greater then ever.  I do enjoy the sparkle of glitter, especially around the holidays.  What I don't enjoy is having glitter in places that it shouldn't be...like my forehead or in between my eye lashes or under my dining room table.

Thanksgiving Tablescapes

I enjoy entertaining.  I haven't had the opportunity to do much of it since reproducing, but I do enjoy it on the random occasion that we have people over to celebrate something.  I always admire the details that some people put into their tables...the place cards, the neatly folded napkins, the fresh flowers, the unique decorations.  It takes a lot of time to come up with an idea, shop for the items if you don't already have them, place them in just the right spot, etc.  Guys don't get it.  At least, my guy doesn't.  He would be just as happy getting a paper plate and eating in the garage while watching TV in his man cave.  But, there's just something special about a festive, pretty table that puts me in a happy mood.  So to help get you in the mood for decorating your table with festive Thanksgiving table trimmings, I have found a few good ones.  I hope they will lend inspiration for your own celebration!

Alzheimer's Awareness

In light of Alzheimer's Awareness month, I wanted to take a minute to share a story about my dad.  If you don't know my personal connection with Alzheimer's you can read about it here.

My father was an extremely intelligent and determined man.  He didn't have a lot of luxuries growing up, so he worked to put himself through college, dental school, and pediatric dental residency.  His thirst for knowledge of any type was like nothing I have seen before.  He was always reading about his profession, his passions, and other topics that were of interest to him in an effort to educate himself as much as possible.  His brain was being challenged on a daily basis with his beloved crossword puzzles and nightly bedtime reading.  I mention this because any form of dementia can affect any brain at any time.

Growing up, my dad's hands were always rugged and calloused from endless hours of yard work and playing softball.  But, in his later years, his hands became soft and smooth.  No more callouses, no more scrapes.  I loved to sit and hold his hands, and although they were not the same hands that I held when I was little, they were still comforting simply because they were my Daddy's.

2016 Gift Guides

Hey!  Believe it or not, the holidays are right around the corner.  Are you ready to shop?  I am the type of person who shops all year round.  I watch for deals, try to get things on sale, or if I come across something I think would be perfect for someone in particular, I'll buy it and save it for Christmas, even if I find the item in June.  However, sometimes I do forget what I have previously purchased...so I have to keep a close tab on my goods or things can get out of hand.

I'm going to apologize up front to all of the people with daughters because I am not going to be much help in that department.  I have absolutely no idea what little girls are into or what is popular for tweens.  I do however know first hand what tractor loving/STEM obsessed boys like!  And, I have included gift guides for guys and gals as well.  Let's get to it, shall we?

For your tractor or construction truck loving little boy (or girl for that matter!):

DIY: Dollar Store Sunburst Craft

I was at Target the other day, and noticed this interesting looking home decor item.

I liked the look of it, but I wasn't really feeling it for $20.  Later, I happened upon this site that listed Dollar Store crafts, and I saw these snowball looking things.  The wheels started turning...I could make this and paint it gold, for a similar effect and much less moolah.

I'm Coming Out of the JCP Closet

I like to dress cute.  What can I say, I enjoy wearing clothes that are in style and make me feel like a girl.  Since becoming a mother though I feel like I haven't wanted to spend a lot of money on clothing for myself.  For one thing, it often gets ruined, either by my children or my dogs, and it's hard to justify spending a large amount of money on something that could potentially be barfed on.  I love shopping at Nordstrom and J Crew and don't get me wrong, they do have good deals from time to time, but for the most part I have been finding some really cute stuff at JC Penny lately.  What the WHAT?  That's right.  JC Penny.  I know what you're thinking...that's where my grandmother gets her velour jumpsuits and her old lady bras.  But, I'm telling you they have really stepped up their game the past few years!  I have secretly been shopping there for a while, and I get compliments A LOT on things I wear.  Sometimes I offer up where I got it and people are always shocked!

DIY: How to Sew an Original Hem

Do you have a favorite pair of jeans but they are just not the right length?  That happens to me quite frequently.  I am too tall for the petite length, but the regular length is often just a tad too long so they end up dragging on the floor and look sloppy.  Instead of spending money paying for alterations every single time I wanted to shorten my pants, I learned how to hem them myself.

Lovin Lately

Hey there!  I haven't done a favorite things post in a while, so I thought it was time to share some other items that I have been lovin lately!  I can NOT believe it's already November.  Where did the year go?  Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and then time just snowballs until 2017.  I love it though...all of the things to do and yummy food and getting together with family and friends.  It's so fun, but it's also a lot of work.  Luckily I actually enjoy getting together with my family, so that definitely makes the holidays more joyful! Anywho, on to the items you have always wanted, but never knew it.

Halloween Hangover

Does anyone else have a candy Hangover?  I'm always a little bummed out the day after Halloween.  So much build up, so much sugar, not enough sleep, then...crash.  Now what?  At least we have some super cute pictures to go through and remember how much fun it was.

Past Halloweens / Fun DIY Costume Ideas

As I may have mentioned before, I LOVE creating Halloween costumes!  It is something I look forward to all year.  I have made several of my own costumes throughout the years, but now I get to channel my creative energy into making costumes for my boys.  In the spirit of Halloween (how did it become the end of October already???) I thought I'd share some of my past creations.

Pumpkin Patches Galore!

In this day and age of excess, we decided to hit up 4 separate pumpkin patches this year.  One of which we actually visited twice.  Ahem, can we say overkill?  However, in my defense, we have had BEAUTIFUL weather here this month, so I figured we might as well take advantage of it and go do fun things while we still can.  A couple of months from now we will be snowed in and wishing we could swim in the kernels of the corn pit once again.

mug shot anyone?

DIY Tractor Halloween Costume

My son is OBSESSED with any sort of farming or construction machine.  Tractors, trailers, combines, excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, rollers, cranes, forklift...you get the point.  I know more about construction and farming vehicles then I ever thought I would.  So, when you ask a little boy what he wants to be for Halloween, guess what he said?  Yep!  Tractor.  Well, backhoe to be exact.  He had a hard time deciding between the John Deer combine and the Caterpillar backhoe, but eventually the backhoe won.  I think it was the dual buckets that helped him finally make a decision.  At any rate, I was glad he picked one because I was anxious to get to work on it!

Neiman Marcus Dip

This is one of those recipes that is SUPER easy and DELICIOUS!  The best kind of recipe if you ask me.  I have no idea why it's called Neiman Marcus Dip though.  I can only assume it originated from a Neiman Marcus cookbook, but I don't own one, so I am not for sure.  But what I do know is that it's a crowd pleaser.  I have tested this hypothesis time and time again without fail.  I mean, how could you go wrong...bacon-mayonnaise-cheese!  Hell yeah!  So join me in making this tasty appetizer with a mysterious name!

Girlfriends are Good for the Soul

My dear friend, Carey flew in from Portland to visit me!  It's always great to see her and catch up on each other's lives.  She's one of those true friends...you know the kind...the friend you might not call as much as you want to, or might not text as much as you should, but no matter the time spent apart, you just pick up where you left off and never skip a beat.  I cherish friendships like that!

Fall Cardigans

I have been loving all the new cardigans and wraps for fall!  We recently had a quick tease of cooler weather here in Kansas City, so it got me in the mood for some cozy sweaters and wraps.  It's warming up again, so even though I won't be able to break out my cardigans just yet, it's fun to see what's out there in anticipation of the cooler weather that is hopefully just around the corner!

Halloween Home Tour 2016

I love, love, love Halloween!  I just think it is so much fun and it's a chance for everyone to be a kid again!  My boys have really gotten into the Halloween spirit too, so that makes it even more fun to decorate and construct costumes.  Speaking of costumes, we have been hard at work making them so hopefully I will have another post soon with details!  Both boys really like to help me decorate.  I am a bit of a perfectionist, so after becoming a parent, I have had to learn to let some things go.  It's not the placement of the pumpkins that matters, it's the joy on their faces when they are the ones who get to decorate.  At least that's what I keep telling myself.  It's hard though.  Sometimes I just really want to rearrange things!  Any who, here's a quick tour of our home this year!  Happy Halloween!

Burgundy and Navy

Burgundy and Navy are everywhere this fall.  I'm down with these deep jewel tones right now.  Burgundy has many alter egos: wine, bordeaux, berry, maroon to name a few.  These colors look great on any complexion.  They compliment each other when worn together or look great alone!  I'm a huge fan of anything that won't show the red wine I accidentally spill on myself!  No, seriously.  I've actually banned myself from drinking out of stemmed wine glasses.  At home anyway.  Nooooooo, I don't ask for my wine to be served in a water glass at restaurants.  So far, my track record of keeping the glasses upright at restaurants is actually pretty good.  Although, I just jinxed myself with that braggadocios comment.  And I know what you're thinking...If I wasn't such a lush, I wouldn't be spilling my wine.  But that's really not it!  Seriously!  Well maybe sometimes.  But most of the time I'm just clumsy.  Anyway, what were we talking about?  Oh yeah!  Fashion!  Here are some of my faves at the moment. Some of these items below come in either burgundy or navy.

Chase's 7th birthday: Mad Scientist

My little scientist is turning 7!  It's hard for me to believe.  No, really.  I even created his invite and wrote, "Chase is turning 6!"  I'm obviously in serious denial that I have a 7 year old!  7 just seems so old.  How can I have a child that old already?  At any rate, whether I'm ready to accept it or not, it was time to celebrate.  And, Chase wanted to celebrate Mad Scientist style!

DIY Slime

I remember making slime as a kid.  I was fortunate to have a very crafty mother, so we made lots of different things growing up.  And, with 2 brothers, slime was a very popular item around our house.  So now that I have 2 boys of my own, it's fun to see how much they enjoy not only playing with the slime, but enjoy the process of making it too!

With just a few ingredients, it's sure to create some fun for your kiddos.  Mine can play with this stuff for hours.  It's a perfect rainy day activity!

Magic Balloon Inflation / Baking soda and vinegar experiment

If you are looking for a cheap, quick science experiment, look no further then your pantry.  Mixing baking soda and vinegar causes a bubbling reaction that is sure to excite any child!  My son has spent countless hours mixing these 2 ingredients over and over and over, and he never bores of watching the "explosions".

Mad for Plaid

There are so many cute plaid shirts and accessories out there this season!  And, I'm not talking lumberjack style plaids.  They are all colors, and all fabrics.  You could style them with jeans, a skirt, a vest...they are more versatile then you may think!  Move over Paul Bunyon!  Here a few of my favorites:

Sugar Detox: Week 4

I made it! My goal was to go sugar free for 4 weeks, and I made it!

I can't say that I completely 100% abstained from sugar, but I did a damn good job.  I am proud of myself and I am looking forward to continuing these eating habits in the future.  This past week was my son's birthday, so I enjoyed a small piece of birthday cake.  (And I'll admit that I snuck a lick or two of the batter while I was making it).  I was happy with myself that after eating only 1 small piece of cake, I was truly satisfied!  In the past, I would have taken a much larger piece, with extra icing and ice cream on top, and then wanted more.  THIS was my goal.  I want to be able to enjoy a treat periodically without feeling like I want MORE.

Elephant Toothpaste Science Experiment

My son LOVES to do science experiments.  We have several different experiment books, all sorts of science kits, and a whole cabinet full of ingredients for experimenting.  Sometimes he likes to follow the directions and do an actual experiment, and other times he enjoys mixing things together to form his own creations!  I have found that purchasing random ingredients from the Dollar Store keeps us both happy.  I don't mind that he is wasting these ingredients on his bizarre experiments, and he is happy that he can have free reign to be the scientist he wants to be!

Chase's 5th birthday: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

Chase's absolute favorite movie is Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.  He loves the main character, Flint Lockwood, because he is an inventor (which is what Chase strives to be when he grows up). So, naturally, he wanted a party that would make Flint proud.

Here we are!  Chase as Flint Lockwood, Adam as Flint's dad, Niki as Flint's friend, Sam Sparks, and Beckham is sporting a spaghetti and meatballs headband, leftover from Chase's Halloween old costume.

Random Ramblings

So, I just needed to take a minute to let my brain unload a dump of worthless thoughts.  Just things that I have been pondering and I am sure you will be enlightened by.

1.  I am feeling defeated by the dirt that is trapped under my son's fingernails.  Despite all of the hand washing, nail clipping, baths, and scrubbing, he still looks like a mechanic that has had his hands in a greasy engine all day.  It is somewhat embarrassing when he goes out in public and people notice his grimy little fingers.  I feel the need to explain myself and that I promise I TRIED to get them clean!  Maybe this winter I can just keep mittens on him at all times.

2.  The good news is I don't have to decorate for Halloween this year because there are so many spiderwebs around here.  The bad news....these webs are formed by REAL spiders!  Crap.  It's time to move back to the suburbs.

3.  I have had goosebumps for the past 48 hours straight.  It's not even THAT cold, but when it goes from 90° to 60° within a week, my body thinks I moved to Antarctica.  Time to break out the scarves!...and the long johns, wool socks, and puffer jackets.

4.  I just learned how to make the degree symbol °!  If you have a Mac, hit shift + option + 8.  If you have a Windows operating system, I have no idea how to help you.  So sorry.  I don't know much about computers, as you will learn.  By the way you Mac users, do not hit option + command + 8 or you will get a scary warning like this:

Dang!  How in the heck do I have 1422 bookmarks?  I really need to clean those out.

5.  Just when I think my son ate a great dinner last night, I realize that 90% of it ended up in his lap....and then on the floor.  Oh-well.  Better luck next time.

xoxo,
Niki

Chase's 4th birthday: Fireman

Sugar Detox: Week 3

This has been the easiest week so far.  I am hoping that my body and mind are getting accustomed to not having sugar and having very limited whole grains.  I do plan on adding back more whole grains as time goes on, but for now, I am trying to limit them.  I usually eat leftovers or a salad for lunch.  If there's nothing in the fridge to eat, then I eat tuna fish with some mayonaise, dijon mustard, and dill relish.  We went to a fish fry at our friend's house, and I definitely indulged in some fish!  But, I stayed away from the rest of the unhealthy pot luck dishes that people brought.  I ate a side salad, fruit, and zucchini with my fish.   You should have seen the desert table!  Oh goodness.  It looked delicious, but I didn't even have a taste.  I was afraid if I had just a little bit, I wouldn't be able to stop and then...10 brownies have gone missing.  Oops!  I know myself too well.  I'm not ready to test my willpower just yet.

Chase's 2nd birthday: Cord party

Oh, this child of mine.  He doesn't play with dinosaurs or cars.  No.  He plays with cords.  That's right, you heard me.  Electrical cords are his jam.  Ever since he was itty bitty, he would crawl over his toys and head towards the lamp cord or the vacuum cleaner cord.  This is a mom's worst nightmare! Are you kidding me?  My baby wants to play with electrical cords!?!?!?  He could get shocked, or wrap it around his neck!  I tried my best to interest him in other things, but he is persistent!  So, when you can't change it, you should embrace it, am I right?

Chase's 1st birthday: Cowboys

In honor of Chase turning 7 this month, I decided to take a trip down memory lane and post all of his past birthday parties.  I enjoy coming up with themes and working to make each party unique and special for him.

It doesn't seem possible that the first year of life went by so quickly!  Those first few months were the hardest months of my life, I mean, no one really prepares you for the DRAMATIC changes that happen when you bring a baby home from the hospital.  My world was pretty much rocked, but somehow we managed and here we are at Chase's 1st birthday party!

Things I'm Lovin' Lately

I wanted to share a few things that I have really been LOVING lately!

As you know, I've been going through a sugar detox lately, and as a result, I have been eating a LOT more salads.  I used to assemble them on one of my dinner plates because the bowls I have are not big enough for an entree size salad.  But salad always seemed to be spilling off of the plate.  I know, these are major problems I have.  However, I found these bowls while racing down the aisles in Wal-Mart (because the littler time as I can spend in Wal-Mart the better).  Truth be told, I actually try to avoid Wal-Mart if possible, but there are just some things that I can't seem to get at my beloved Target...so every now and then I'll suck it up and go early to avoid the crazies and people who haven't showered in a month.

DIY: Custom Birthday Shirts

It's become a tradition for me to make a custom shirt for my boys on their birthdays.  So far, their birthday themes have been things that they have been very passionate about, so it just seems fitting to make shirt to go along with the theme that they can continue to wear all year long.

DIY Cord Keeper

I want to show all of the other organization freaks out there what I like to do with my unruly cords.  I know I can't be the only one who gets pleasure out of having organized cords.  At least, I hope I'm not the only one!  It's super simple, and you probably have everything you need in your house!

Sugar Detox: Week 2

Well, it's week 2 of my sugar detox, and I'm still hanging in there!

TMI warning: I have had some bowel issues this week, and I'm wondering if it's possibly my body trying to detoxify.  I am a fairly healthy eater on a regular basis, but I have definitely consumed a lot of salads, kale, veggies, nuts and eggs over the past 2 weeks.  My stomach didn't feel bad, but I've had to stay close to the bathroom for the past few days!  I warned you!...TMI.
